About Howe Sound

HISTORY

We opened our doors in Squamish on July 26, 1996. The founders of the business were Stephen Shard, David Fenn and the Fenn Family. Stephen Shard left the company in 2001, and today the company remains a family-owned enterprise.

We operate out of a beautiful, wooden craft style building, built for our purposes. The inn consists of a pub, restaurant, banquet room, 20 guest rooms and microbrewery. The brewery distributes products under the Howe Sound name to over 300 stores and pubs in British Columbia. In 2009, we began shipments of our beer to the United States and Alberta.

The brewery has won many accolades for the quality of its beers. At the 2007 North American Beer Awards, it won a gold medal for Garibaldi Honey Pale Ale and a bronze medal for Diamond Head Oatmeal Stout. In 2009, it won a silver medal for Bailout Bitter and a bronze medal for Baldwin and Cooper Best Bitter. In the winter of 2008, Bailout Bitter received international attention as a recession-fighting beer, and was featured in worldwide media, including Good Morning America, the Globe and Mail, Global TV, and European and Asian press.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Green Initiatives We've undertaken a variety of green initiatives since our opening in 1996 in an effort to reduce our impact on the environment. These include: >> Use of end-of-tank beer and spent barley in beer cuisine at the inn. Early on, it was evident that we had to put our thinking caps on to look at options for using beer and grain in the kitchen. Items include ale and cheddar soup, a variety of beer breads, desserts and sauces and reductions. >> Re-use of spent grain from the brewing process as animal feed on local farms. We go through about 150,000 kgs of barley every year, so it's a lot of feed for local pigs and sheep. >> Use of a re-usable 1 litre bottle in our packaged beer. This beer bottle was designed by us, and offers a combination crown and swing cap, allowing the consumer to re-use the bottle after finishing the beer. We don't throw any of our bottles in the garbage - they are sought after by U-brews and homebrewers.

Howe Sound Helps From day one, we have been a very active member of the community in the sponshorship of charitable events, individuals and organizations. These include: >> Squamish Food Bank
Community Christmas Care, Test of Metal Bike Race, Squamish Triathlon, Cat Lake Clean-up, Local Trail Maintenance, SOAR Sailing Race, , Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival, Howe Sound Performing Arts , West Vancouver Youth Band, , Squamish Women's Shelter, Squamish Hospice Society, Sauder School of Business Social Entrepreneurship Initiative, Howe Sound Secondary School Programs for Youth, A lot of Recreational Fundraisers.

BREWERY

OVER A CENTURY AGO BREWERIES DOTTED BRITISH COLUMBIA'S LANDSCAPE.

Hop farming flourished and our town's Squamish Valley Hop Ranch, supplied hops to the British Empire. With the advent of Prohibition, the number of breweries and hop farms dwindled. By the 1970s only a few large breweries remained.

In 1980, BC's John Mitchell and Frank Appleton pioneered North America's first modern craft brewery at Horseshoe Bay on BC's spectacular Howe Sound. This began what has become known as the "craft brewing renaissance".

In 1996, John Mitchell helped design the Howe Sound Brewery, and worked as our first brewer, developing our initial recipes. Kown as the "grandfather of micro-brewing in Canada", we are proud of his ongoing relationship with our brewery. Today we continue to brew in the craft style using unfiltered 100% barley mash. We pride ourselves in brewing a diverse selection of flavorful, well balanced ales. We invite you to enjoy the experience.
